a meditation

A tree, my mother says, adapts to changing seasons and survives. A tree provides food for animals who eat from its branches. A tree offers protection.
But a tree, I say, can de-root from the ground if winds become too strong. A tree can be displaced from its home with ease.
I want to be like a mountain instead.
A mountain doesn’t wither in the seasons. A mountain is strong and resilient. A mountain won’t bend when the world pressures it to.
But a tree, my mother responds, can heal. Can a mountain do that, too?
